Leadcold chooses SCK CEN for irradiation testing

In a nuclear reactor, both corrosion resistance and irradiation resistance is important. Leadcold’s alumina forming steels have previously been proven to be uniquely corrosion resistant in liquid lead at temperatures ranging from 550 to 850°C. Also, they have been designed to tolerate irradiation by fast neutrons.

To ensure the materials meet the irradiation tolerance requirements, Leadcold has signed an agreement with the Belgian nuclear research centre SCK CEN (Studiecentrum voor Kernenergie / Centre d’Etude de l’Energie Nucléaire), a global leader in its field, after discussions commenced due the spring of 2022. The joint work will start immediately, with the design of a new irradiation rig.
